I've played the guitar for about ten years, styles ranging from blues to heavy metal. For my foray into Spanish/Flamenco style guitar, my local guitar shops did not carry any guitars designed specifically for flamenco. I'm not an expert or a luthier, but generally speaking, the difference between a standard classical guitar and a "flamenco guitar" is that flamenco guitars have a lower action(the strings are closer to the fretboard), and the body of the guitar is lighter and thinner to create a brighter, "spankier" tone. When buying a guitar, particularly an acoustic guitar, it's preferable to try out the exact instrument you're thinking about purchasing. However, none of my local guitar shops carried flamenco guitars, so I had to purchase online. In this situation, the Cordoba F7 was the obvious choice. It was in my price range, and Cordoba is a well respected brand with excellent quality control.
Cordoba did not dissapoint. The F7 is a beautiful guitar that has met my expectations and needs. It's a very "barebones" guitar; it is NOT acoustic-electric, and it doesn't have an endpin for attaching a guitar strap (not uncommon for a classical guitar). However, the F7 has quality where it really counts: Playability and tone.
The F7 is a pleasure to play. The low action allows for runs to be played with speed and precision; low action inevitably will lead to a small(and I really mean small) amount of occasional fret buzz. While this wouldn't be desireable when playing a traditional classical piece, it's fantastic for flamenco. A little bit of buzz when a note is initially plucked adds grit and character to the tone.
The F7 has, in my opinion, very good tone for its price point. Don't buy a guitar designed for flamenco if you're after deep booming bass tone; that's what steel-string dreadnought guitars are for. The F7 sounds very lively, with a lot of grit, slap, and pop to offer; great for Flamenco, but it's also a pleasing tone for the blues and rock riffs I've strummed on it.
In case you're wondering, the F7 is LIGHT. One of the lightest acoustics I've ever tried. The body is thinner than most acoustics, leading to its brighter sound. However, don't mistake its light weight for low quality construction- I've been very impressed by the quality of its construction. The wood is beautiful, the neck is very smooth and fast, and the tuners do a solid job of staying in tune. This may be one of Cordoba's less expensive models, but it certainly benefits from Cordoba's attention to detail and superb quality control.
To conclude, I'll simply say this: My interest in guitar had been dwindling over the past few years as I wallowed stagnation. Since receiving the F7, I play it every chance I get. Vegetating in front of the TV now includes running scales and practicing new techniques. It's immensely satisfying, and I would recommend the study of Flamenco guitar and the purchase of the Cordoba F7 to anyone and everyone!
