Riptide UB-5NS Baritone Ukulele - Satin Finish Review

Received it, and opened it up. I was very excited, because this is my first Ukulele. I got a Baritone, because I play and teach guitar. It uses the same tuning as the top four strings of the guitar. I plan to use it with my younger students as a tool to learn chord shapes, and use it for myself, because I love all forms of music.

The Sound: To me it sounds pretty good! The hole configuration is different, but it works nicely, and you can hear yourself.

Construction: I was a little worried after I ordered it because some of the other reviews I have seen, but I am very pleased. I think that they fixed some finishing issues, and it is light and sturdy. Different but pretty darn cool looking to me. Nice little bonus is that they put Aquila Nygut strings on it. Intonation seems right on, and no crazy fret edges or anything like that. Only thing that I would like to see is a little better tuners, but they work, and that is what really matters!

One little issue: I have had the Uke for a day now, and the "D" string broke at the tuning head. I am hoping this is just an anomaly, which I am pretty sure it is.

Anyway, Would I recommend it? Certainly!

Riptide UC-5NS Concert Ukulele - Satin Finish Review

I will be returning this ukulele. Boulder Creek must have switched to a different factory for their new 2011 version, but no website (Amazon.com, Boulder Creek, other music sites, etc) pictures the new ukes. The new ones still have the double sound hole, but lack the jagged look up top and Riptide written across the body. Most importantly, they are of a MUCH lesser quality. I have a soprano Boulder Creek that I LOVE to play, but I am entirely disappointed with the 2011 version.

The wood and finish are of a lesser quality--the new ones are covered with scratches (especially if played by someone lacking technique to avoid hitting their nail on the uke), whereas the old ones have a very soft feel and are not easy to scratch or mark.

I thought maybe it was the specific ukulele I received so I bought two others of the same model from a different website, but they are all poor quality and each is covered in different flaws. (E.g., bumps in the wood, poor seeming, scratch marks upon newly opening from box.) The fretboard is of a lesser quality and different shape. Even the tuning pegs are cheaper. I do not think the 2011 Boulder Creek ukuleles are worthwhile at all. The beautiful intonation of the old ones is completely lost with the new lower quality.

If you can find a pre-2011 Boulder Creek then I say, buy it! I love mine!!! But now that online stores only have the 2011 in stock, I would avoid them all together. I am very disappointed with Boulder Creek and I have contacted them to let them know. Maybe next year's models will be better! :-/

Note: I give it 2 stars instead of one because it's certainly better than say one of the dolphin-bridge ukes, but for what I expected from Boulder Creek, this ukulele itself would be a 1.

RockStand Hardshell Folding Multiple Guitar Stand - (for 7 Guitars) Review

I believe the one star review is due to poor shipping, which in that case, you can ship it back for a better one. We use these all the time at church and it works very well. It doesn't scratch or damage our guitars at all. I'm planning on buying one for myself. I like that it is easy to set up and tear down. There isn't much to it. It fits all seven guitars well. A bit expensive, but I think it is worth it rather than buying a bunch of individual stands. But, if you like having your guitar sit right by where you play, then this may not be for you. I like it because I'm wireless, so all I do is pick up my guitar and rock n roll. :)

Roland FP-7F-BK 88-Key Digital Piano - Black Review

Before Roland, I was very skeptical about digital pianos in general. I had tried every Yamaha, every Panasonic at my local music store and none of them held up. There was always something about the sound that seemed off, not to mention the feeling of the keys. Then I tried the Roland FP-7F and it was simply a new world. It was as if someone had taken the very essence of a piano and replicated it exactly. However, even after trying it I spend hours upon hours over many weeks checking reviews online, looking to see if there was something I had missed. Finally, coming to the conclusion that pretty much everyone felt as I had, namely felt that this truly was the first "real piano" experience digital had ever provided, I bought one and let me tell you, after several months of playtime with it, I am not disappointed. Believe me when I say: they thought of EVERYTHING. The pedal has resistance that makes it feel just like a real piano mechanism touching up on felt. Pressing one key and holding it down, the sound seems to linger almost endlessly, pervading the air. In terms of a true piano experience from digital, it has never come closer than it has with the FP-7F and, frankly, it's difficult for me to imagine what more it could do. If you're on the fence about digital, my only advise is to get off it right now and let yourself fall in love with this amazing instrument.

Cons:
The only real con I have is that the onboard speakers aren't the best. Of course, the piano is one of the most difficult instruments to truly replicate so I wasn't expecting much from them but it is something to keep in mind if you're planning on performing with it. With my HD-650's, however, it's like I'm at a concert hall with just me and my instrument.

I cannot stress enough how truly amazing the FP-7F experience is and, indeed, how far we've come in terms of digital instruments in general.
