Blackstar HT1 Series Guitar Combo Amplifier Review

Been playing on one of these now off an on (I've got a couple other amps) for a few months now, and figured it deserved to have at least one review. I've been pretty impressed by the range of sounds it can crank out. Mainly picked it up because I wanted something that was both versatile and able to produce its entire sound range at volumes appropriate for my apartment. This thing works perfectly.

This can do anything from clean, bluesy tones all the way up to metal-worthy chugging. Separate gain and volume knobs let you play at full distortion at pretty much any output volume. The ISF knob gives you pretty decent control over your tone, though it doesn't (for me) completely replace full tone controls. It works well enough...I'm just not necessarily buying the marketing hype on it. Given that the HT-5 (and other Blackstar amps) have both the ISF and separate tone controls, I guess this is more meant to emulate different speaker configurations. But it...doesn't really do that either?

The speaker-emulated/headphone output works pretty well for recording (I ran it into a decent ASIO card), though it can be just a bit noisy. Works great in headphones, though. The MP3 input I have not used, but I imagine it does what it claims? You'll need a cable that can go from 3.5mm to 1/4" to hook that up, or the proper adapter(s).

The 8" speaker gets a bit underwhelming at higher volumes, and can sound a bit boxy at times. This is kinda par for the course for an amp this size, so I wouldn't really ding it for that, and the external speaker output gives you the option to run it into something a bit beefier. I ran it into a 12" external speaker and was definitely impressed at the difference it made. I still don't know that it would ever cut it practicing with a band...1W is still 1W. But when you don't need the portability of the built-in 8", it's worthwhile.

The lack of reverb is...annoying at times. I figured I could just make up for it with a pedal, but then your reverb is going through the pre-amp and it just doesn't work out all that well (you can reduce the level of reverb on the pedal to compensate, I guess). I'd assume that the HT-1R (and RH) has the reverb between the pre-amp and power amp stages, which will probably give you a better result...probably worth the extra $50.

Overall this seems like a solid amp, and a good value for the money (if you insist on tubes, that is). What it lacks in volume it makes up for in range, letting it stack up nicely against a lot of other low-wattage amps that may go a bit louder. It may not wind up cutting it as an "only" amp (you'll probably eventually want something larger to complement it), but at the same time it shouldn't wind up gathering dust, either.

EDIT: Bumped up from 4 stars to 5 stars. Given what it is (a 1W amp with an 8" speaker), it's pretty great. I think before I was judging it based on what I wanted it to be. But as it is, I keep coming back to this amp.

So far I actually really like this pedal.Its not perfect, but it's decent. But I have a problem that I will get to later. First the Pros and Cons.

Pros:
Good Boosting
Feedback Sounds Natural
Boss Quality

Cons:
Expensive for what your getting.
Tone knob is REALLY sensitive.
The boost is clean until about 3 o'clock on the boost level.
The mid boost on character adds some gain.
Gets noisy if tone knob is turned or boost knob goes past 1/2 way.
The metal seems different than the other boss pedals...the metal is not as thick and has odd texture. (but I'm not worried about it breaking)

So in short this pedal does what it says, however, putting a feedbacker with a booster is not such a great idea. The problem is where I put this effect into my signal chain. If I put it before my distortion, the feedback part sounds excellent, but the booster hardly boosts any volume. If I put it after the distortion, it boosts the volume very well, but the feedback part sounds incredibly muffled and muddy. Any suggestions on what I could do? Your help is truly appreciated. If I could get this problem fixed I would change the rating to 5 stars because it is a great pedal I just want it to sound good in both ways. Thanks! (Hope I helped you as well) :)

After numerous unhelpful returned emails from Boss regarding my problems with this pedal, I took the problem into my own hands. I spent hours fiddling with the placement, knobs, and sounds that can come out of this pedal and I discovered numerous things. First, if the FB-2 is in front of your gain pedal, it will drive the pedal harder (i.e. more gain), but not necessarily boost your volume. The feedback function works great in the position and will give you infinite sustain for years. If you place it after your gain pedal, the FB-2 will boost volume very well, but the feedback function is useless in this placement. Luckily for me, my Digitech RP355, I love Digitech, has a A-B amp function that can change the volume and tone. So for my purposes this pedal is used for the feedback, which is excellent before gain. Sounds very natural, adds upper or lower harmonics (depending on feedback knob), rise time, and will give infinite sustain. DO NOT buy this pedal if you want the feedback function and the boost function at the same time, it just does not work. As I said earlier, putting these two effects together was not really a good idea. However, when used one at a time they do their job just fine. This pedal does also take some time to find a good sound. Very pleased with pedal and shipping company.The bundle was very fair in price too. Thanks. ROCK ON! :D

Cigano GJ-10 Django Student Jazz Guitar (Mahogany/Rosewood) Review

This guitar is one of those hidden gems nobody wants to admit is worth wild. It is a gypsy jazz guitar, so pretty much every guitar player will avoid it because they either know nothing about it or assume it will be junk like the other cheap Django guitars. Well, I've owned all the cheaper models, the Arias, the Stagg, the other no name brands...the Cigano smashes them. This guitar is not junk, it is an exceptionally well made acoustic guitar, right now you can get it for around $330 new if you search for it online. The GJ10 has a superior neck to $1000+ taylor guitars you can see at guitar center, guitars like the 114ce which are one of the best cutaway guitars you can get. This cigano not only feels better, but actually sounds better. This is going to be hard for anyone to believe, a $400 guitar besting an expensive TAYLOR? No way! Well, it does in its own way, while the taylors are more clear sounding, they simply do not project like the cigano does. Pick them up side by side and see which one feels better, the cigano wins hands down for me. The taylors feel like plastic and are not made for lead soloing, their finish mades it feel plastic like and super slick and smooth, this is not a good thing for me. I prefer the natural wood grain feel to the Cigano. In terms of pure quality, the body on the Taylor 114ce is better, but the neck is not as easy to play on as the GJ10. The cigano simply feels better in every way and it sounds better for lead soloing. Ibanez made the AE series that is also nice for Django style, look them up if you prefer to avoid the gypsy jazz guitar look. the ibanez AE cutaways go for under $300 used and are comparable, amazing neck and body on them, also a gem guitar and can be a valid substitute for django music and lead soloing with the right strings. None of the expensive acoustic guitars have necks well tailored and suited for playing lead, the Ibanez AE does, but again it still does not sound as good as the Cigano GJ10, which projects more loudly, more clearly and does not resonate as much. You want a solid, loud flat tone with Gypsy Jazz play and nothing but a real Gypsy jazz guitar will give it to you. There are some cutaways like the ibanez out there that are good alternatives, but still resonate and linger too much with lead soloing.

This guitar needs to sit near a humidifier, which you can get for $30 all over the place. Get a cool mist humidifier and stick it in the room you will keep your guitars in, it will keep them from buzzing. I did not properly take care of mine, my cigagnos 12-15th frets on the high e string were 100% dead, no sound but a clink out of them. Got the humidifier and it went back to like new after a day. The guitar is worth every penny, invest a little into a new bone nut piece and maybe a new bridge if you feel like you want a much nicer sound, the stock pieces are all decent but found the strings to dig into the nut piece at the top way too much, thankfully replacing it with a really nice nut piece is not expensive. I highly recommend doing so. Get yourself some nice gypsy jazz medium strings and you will have yourself an excellent guitar. $330 for this guitar is an absolute steal as it sounds similar to the gypsy guitars twice its price. I cannot stress how great the feel of the neck is, its immensely rare to find a guitar with good build quality and a 10/10 neck built for speed. Great guitar!
