Harbinger APS15 15" Powered PA Speaker Review
I was pleasantly surprised at the amount of power and clean sound this speaker produces for the price.
CONS:
1) Noticeable distortion at higher volume levels. BUT to be fair, mid level volume on this sucker is pretty loud and at mid level, is distortion free.
2) Below average build quality. The knobs feel flimsly. The EQ seems uncomfortably fragile, hasn't broke on me yet, but I handle the EQ with kid gloves just in case. The input on the back wobbles after just a year of use. The Harbinger faceplate on the front bottom jiggled and finally fell of on its own after about a year. However if you are gentle and don't constantly lug this speaker back and forth, I believe you will get a good lifespan out of them, I've had these speakers for over 2 years and sound is still as good as the day I bought them.
PROS:
1) VERY LOUD and clean sound upto mid level (which is very loud). A pair of these could easily handle the average house party comfortably. NOTE: These speakers will NOT be appropriate for pro DJ work nor will they be appropriate for large room live venue work. Bought a pair of these because I was looking for a better solution for sound for my gaming PC, and for gaming purposes, every "high end" gaming pc speakers were overpriced and weak...bought these and Holy Shizz, this will melt your face. Mids are average to above average and highs are crisp and clean.
2) ABOVE AVERAGE BASS RESPONSE: This sucker has some serious THUMP at mid levels (will distort at higher volumes). With volume set to mid, when a bomb goes off in a game, you will crap your pants. The bass is SOLID and will sometimes hit so hard, you will be glad you don't have a pacemaker. For gaming, supplies the best bang for the buck by far and you will wonder where the hell these speakers have been all your life. I cannot express how pleased I am with the bass response of this puppy for a speaker in this price range.
3) Good set of 2 inputs for mic, and additional line in with left/right channel..for example for Ipod (with the right adapater which can be bought for 5 bucks), Gaming PC, or even home theater setup. Input 1 and Input 2 have independent volume controls as well as a combined unified master volume control. Also has a line out. Can be daisy chained to other Harbinger speakers.
4) Simple 5 band EQ. Not nearly as good as a dedicated EQ but for minor tweaking gets the job done and frankly, most speakers in this price range don't come with one, so it's definitely a nice touch.
5) VERSATILE for the price. I have a high end Klipsch home theater setup in one room and a very high end expensive Bose home theater setup in another and you know what? Four of these positioned correctly provided MUCH better home theater sound ESPECIALLY in bass response at a fraction of the cost. Sure, you will have to do some DIY wiring to get everything routed to your receiver but when paired with a quality center channel speaker...OUTSTANDING HOME THEATER SOUND. NOTE: If you are an audiophile I suggest for home theater, you route the sub out of your receiver to the IN on the Harbinger and use it solely as a subwoofer and drop loads of cash on appropriate audiophile level surround. However, for the price, is far better than any dedicated "home theater" subwoofer in this price range. If you aren't an audiophile, 4 of these are outstanding for the money for home theater.
BOTTOM LINE: A qualified BUY THIS >>IF<< you can get them for 200 or less. At that price range, incredibly good value if you are careful and gentle with them. A no brainer must buy to add a pair to any serious gaming PC rig and to my pleasant surprise, a high recommend for home theater use. So pleased for the money, I ended buying 6 of these, 2 for my gaming PC and four for my main home theater.
PS: Do NOT buy the lower Harbinger APS12. Shockingly, the APS 12 have incredibly weak sound and distorts even at mid level. Bass response on the APS12 is anemic at best and noticeably distorts.
