Fender Eric Johnson Stratocaster, Maple Fretboard - White Blonde Review

Where do I start?

This guitar has action so low that playing it is like butter. I mean, put 10's on it and they feel lighter than 8's everywhere along the fretboard. The edges are rounded off so that it feels extra smooth. The fretboard is flat and long. It has a vintage finish neck, which feels smooth and creamy. You just don't find those anymore except on vintage or Custom Shop guitars. Neck is also compound radius so that bending, shredding and playing in any style is possible. it's great for jazz, rock, country, you name it. The neck alone is incredible.

The body... this has a nitrocellulose finish. Very thin and you can see and, more importantly, HEAR the high quality alder. It has an open back, like Hendrix and SRV did, to give a better resonance. A huge steel American block. A classic vibe with new features.

The pickups are kinda like 54's and kinda like '69's but with reverse mid, so the mid is usable. Tone controls on every pickup makes the bridge exciting. It's really a wonderful guitar in every respect. If you can't get a good tone and sound out of this guitar, then you need lessons.

Now, they aren't my favorite pickups. That's not a minus, that a personal preference. I had '65 custom shop's reverse engineered for me and those are my favorites. That's because I like that prime Hendrix tone. These are in that ball park on the bridge, but they're more along the woodstock Jimi tone.

This guitar never goes out of tune yet doesn't use trees. It feels solid. More solid than my '61 or even my Les Paul. It comes with a fantastic tweed case and smells like cotton candy (that's the nitro). Best finish you're gonna find. Strat's generally come with poly finish's and I've never played one with a neck this nice. You need to look to Lentz or something completely custom shop to find one this nice.

Now, maybe I got lucky because I've heard of people say they've played 2 or 3 EJ strat's before they found one they were in love with. I'm in love with mine. It's an amazing piece of gear which sounds incredible anywhere. In tube or solid state amps. It plays better than any of my other 25+ guitars.

The only change I would make to it, if I had the guts, is to put my 65 custom shop pickups in it with a reverse bridge ala Hendrix. Then, to me, it would be the perfect guitar.

However, in it's current state it's wonderful, wild with a huge tonal range. There's just no excuse for not playing well or sounding great on this guitar. It's absolutely amazing and easily the best Fender strat you'll find for less than $3000, and that's a conservative estimate.
