6-16-2012 EDITI now own an authentic, master - selected five star import dayan (the smaller drum in a tabla set). Thus, I can now recognize the character tabla sound. Tabla are used frequently in all kinds of music and I know when it's being played. I've heard professional tabla played live at an Indian music and dance performance I attended.
The meinl set is a low quality imitation. It will not provide that character tabla sound at all. I had some idea what the tabla sound should be when I ordered the meinl set which deeply dissapointed. Trying to explain, it didn't have the undertones, the open note / the ring, the deep bass, any of the character of a real tabla set. The meinl set had a very fast decay. What is more, the sounds it was making were not usable at all. They did not approach any standard. I'm not trying to be purposely harsh here. Nor am I am any kind of expert tabla player. I own other Meinl drums (namely the ibo) and I am very happy with it. I only hope to let you know my experience with this set to help you, even for a tabla student, I would not reccomend this set at all.
