First, I own several Fender Guitars, Flat-tops and electrics ,1969 Telecaster Deluxe, 2 Strats of 1970's vintage and many other guitars from other Manufacturers, Gibson to Martin most are American made but I have some superb foreign made Guitars that are great players.I am an old professional guitar player and cannot tell you how many different guitars I have purchased or played over the last 55 - 60 years.
I purchased this Guitar and had it shipped to my home as a gift for my Grandson. (An American Made Strat... a guitar to be proud of.) Much of my disappointment in this Guitar may be due to expecting this Fender Guitar to measure up to the Fender guitars I own and love and the fact that 'Made in America' does not seem to mean much to Fender Guitar co.
Most new guitars require some setup, However, this guitar was absolutely the worst. The Tuners were loose, the neck was bowed like a banana (concave so the truss rod should fix it ....) No, The truss rod fixed the concave problem but the neck had a longitudinal warp or twist that cannot be compensated for. I hoped that the neck would stabilize after it became acclimated to the temperature. Several days and the twist remained.) I have it playing with minimal buzz but it is far from a good player.
The other noticeable quality issues were the 'Nut' was poorly cut with rough string slots that made the low 5th and 6th stick during tuning. (easy fix but sloppy workmanship.) The Strings were so high off the fret board at the first fret that you could hear the pitch of the string rise as you depressed the sting at the first or second fret. The String trees were improperly lined up causing string binding. The Tuners are poor quality compared with the older fenders.
The neck and Middle Pickups are flat sounding without the rich harmonics of my older Strats , I do like the Humbucker but it was way out of adustment as received.
I had a luthier friend use his hot plate to take the twist out of the neck, and we made some tweeks to the neck tilt, adjusted the tremelo claw & springs. Cleaned up the "nut" adjusted the string height.
The positives on this Guitar.. price $800, Nice paint job. The Hardware quality is probably a result of Fender trying to keep the cost down and keep the Price point at $800+.
The negatives, poor quality hardware and workmanship. Setup from Fender is awful as if they just did not care.
The tone from the guitar is probably OK if you are going to crank it up and shred, but if you are looking for rich, full, clean, bell quality tones that you should expect from a Fender Flagship Guitar With the Fender Stratocaster name on it.. BUY Something else!
My Response from Fender was: "All of our guitars require some adjustment & setup after being shipped." That is true, I have tweeked almost every every guitar I have ever owned, But never had to rework one to this level just to get it to play.
There are other Guitars for the same or less money like,PRS, Schecter, Carvel, Ibanez, G&L, ETC that make great guitars and still care about Quality and customer service.
I still have this Guitar and am now using it as a loaner for my beginner students. I Bought my Grandson a very nice New PRS for about the same money that only required a new set of strings to play nicely right out of the box.
Pass on this Guitar, get something more for your money.
