I'm a ukulele teacher and performer, and working with students I've played a lot of inexpensive ukes over the years. The Gretsch G9110 offers a ton of "bang for the buck"... I'm rating it 5 stars in comparison to other all-laminated imported ukes out there. It's not a Kamaka or a Martin, but with that in mind it's a darn nice uke for $120. After hearing the guys over a Hawaii Music Supply raving about them, I thought I'd check one out.

The good: Very clean construction. Scalloped bracing, which I've never seen on a uke of this price. Aquila strings, good intonation across the whole range of the instrument. Decent volume, with a warm mellow sound. Good-looking in a understated way with a very nice vintage vibe. You won't feel embarrassed playing it at your local uke jam.

Potential problem point for some folks: It has friction tuners, which are vintage-accurate, but can be a problem for beginners. After tightening the set screws on mine, they seemed to work fine. At this price, get the uke and live with the tuners for a bit, and swap them out for geared tuners later if you don't like them.

The Gretsch is a bit different than a lot of concert size ukes I've played. It has a 12 fret to the body neck, rather than the more typical 14 frets to the body. This moves the bridge closer to the center of the soundboard and contributes to the warm, open sound. Because of this it feels more like a big soprano ukulele, rather than a small tenor. Being a soprano uke fan, I'm loving it... two thumbs up, Gretsch! Well done.
