I've had this kit for several years now, and while it certainly does not sound as nice as more expensive kits, it could be a whole lot worse. And for the price, it's excellent. Potential buyers should note that this is a shell pack - it only includes the shells of the drums (and stock heads, I believe). Additional hardware, such as a snare stand, hi-hat stand, or cymbal stands. This may not sound very nice, but it is in fact EXCELLENT.Why? The cymbals and heads that come with 'starter' drum kits are terrible. I still use the stock heads that came with my drums (I bought the full set - not a shell pack), but I literally could not stand the cymbals. The money you save by purchasing a shell pack is an investment towards the materials you need (and will actually USE). Good heads (Remo, Evans) multiply the quality of a drum sound. Stock heads make them sound dull. Cymbals that match the quality of this kit (Paiste pst3, Sabian B8, Zildjian ZXT) are a necessity, and they will cost more than the cost of this kit (this cymbal/drum cost ratio is true of almost any quality level).
The next step up from this kit, say an intermediate kit, will cost a fair amount more. The step up from there will be exponential. This kit can last a long, long time. As I mentioned earlier, it has lasted me two years. The quality is excellent. Granted, I take good care of it, but still, the toms are stable (but easily adjustable with a drum key), the bass stays in one spot (and is loud with a nice thump), the snare still pops, and it's shiny!
Just remember that it is a shell pack, and will require:
- a bass pedal
- a snare stand
- at least a hi-hat and one cymbal (like a ride/crash)
- a cymbal stand for each cymbal you buy except the hi-hat, which will require a hi-hat stand
- you'll probably want a throne (a seat for playing the drums)
- a pair of quality sticks
