Product Description

The A400 from Traps Drums is a portable drum kit that feels and sounds like a regular drum kit. The drums are constructed from high-quality, durable A.B.S. and are fitted with Remo heads, steel counter hoops, and are tuned with the traditional multi-screw tuning system. This also allows the use of pads for silent practicing. The rack system that the drums and hardware fit to is made from substantial steel tubing which means that everything stays exactly where it's put when the kit is set up and doesn't move.Geoff Nicholls of Rhythm Magazine asked in 2005: "Can a shell-less kit ever stand in for the real thing?" He concluded: "Shell-less kits are a viable alternative and Traps A400 is easily the best so far."Rack systemThe A400 rack-mounting system is made from sturdy large-diameter chromed steel tubing. The kit can easily be set up for either left- or right-handed players using the supplied tough ABS multifunctional joints. When set up, the rack is very strong and, once fitted with the supplied four large rubber feet, stays where it's placed and doesn't move. This provides a noticeable improvement in playability compared to other portable drum sets in this price bracket.Top Quality HardwareThe A400 comes fitted with quality hardware as standard. This includes hi-hat and kick drum pedals that are both rugged and free moving. Also included is a snare basket, boom cymbal arms (which can be slid into the frame for easy storage). The hardware is both reliable and distinctive with black-painted footplates and a "Traps" embossed seat squab. They also feature quality chain drives, memory locks, expansion springs and clutches.12" snare drumThe A400 12" snare drum has a very crisp sound as a result of the high-quality ABS molding combined with the chrome-plated steel counter hoops, Remo Ambassador heads, and 8 square-headed tension screws. This all results in a snare that's easy to tune and capable of cutting rim shots and thick X-stick sounds. The drum also features a sturdy t

Traps Drums A400 Portable Acoustic Drum Set Review

As a professional drummer/lead vocalist in the Tampa area, I cannot begin to describe how truly amazing these drums are. There are a few important things to point out in order to truly get the most out of this kit:

1. You must get different heads for the kick drum. It sounds horrible in my opinion with the stock heads, but either Evans EQ 1 or Remo PowerStroke heads for the resonance head will make it sound pretty solid. It comes with a powerstroke batter head which is sufficient, but I have heard that Evans EQ 1 heads sound amazing on it....will be trying that soon.
2. Get your own cymbals. The cymbals that come with this set are terrible unless your only use is practice.
3. I would suggest getting a new hi hat stand and kick pedal. Many reviews I have read say the hardware is not sufficient for performing out; I would disagree with this to an extent. They are not the best pedals/hi hat stands for gigging, but they are certainly adequate for a period of time in which you can shop and save for their replacements.
4. I have not experimented with the heads on the toms and the snare, but I imagine that replacing them with better heads would improve the sound. Remo pin stripe are middle of the road heads and you can most likely improve the sound overall with different heads. But I still have the stock tom and snare heads and they sound pretty good.
5. For live performance, always mic these drums. They do not have the same power and projection because they lack the shells to focus and amplify the acoustics. But when they are mic'ed up you will not know the difference.

Some of the benefits I have received from these drums:
1. My set up and tear down time is more than cut in half with these drums. Don't waste money on the canvas cases because then you have to break down the drums and you really save no time. The rack is set up in such a way that you can literally loosen the clamps and fold everything down within a few minutes. Then you carry it right off the stage. I even leave my mics clipped onto the drums while I fold them down and it is just such a time-saver.
2. Because they fold down, they are so easy to transport. I had heavy duty cases for my previous drums and not only was it bulky to transport, but then dealing with removing the cases from stage once you have unpacked the drums and gathering them up again once you are ready to repack them is a hassle and space waster.
3. Assuming you have the right microphones, sound guys love these kits for the most part because they can control the level of the drums more in the mix. Since they are not as loud they do not have as much stage bleed as a traditional kit and everyone can maintain a lower stage volume. This allows the sound guy to control more of the audience level with the faders.
4. $600.....need I say any more. You can't beat this for $600! I have a $5000 Sonor kit that this easily rivals soundwise when mic'ed up and is far easier to transport and set up.
5. When folded up, this entire kit fits in the corner of my bedroom up against the wall. It takes up hardly any floor space.
6. Any rack hardware that uses 1 1/2 in. tubular piping will be compatible with the traps rack. This includes Roland and Gibraltar. Gibraltar has tons of expansion pipes, mic mounting hardware, stands for laptops, iPads, etc. You can make this kit as ellaborate or simple as you want.

Don't be fooled into thinking this is just a practice kit. This is fairly rugged and has withstood the perils of numerous gigs with less than cautious band-mates and roadies moving it around. If you are even considering this kit, stop wondering and just get it. It really makes being a performing drummer much less of a headache.
