As I play small venues I find that my Peavey Classic 30 amp is almost everything I need, it has great tone especially with it's upgraded Celestion Gold speaker but has always lacked one important thing - reliability. Also the C-30 is not the best of technical designs when it comes to maintenance, I felt the dire need for an amp back up.I had recently acquired a Tech 21 Rotochoir which had impressed me immensely. I had also read a lot of 5 star reviews of the Tech 21 Leeds, so I got something of a surprise when I got mine plugged in and running. I did not find the breathtaking "5 star" tone that I had expected! Sure, you can dial up a "Who" sort of sound but I was more interested in a clean Hiwatt sound to accompany my Black Strat and "Gilmour" pedal board. To attempt a fair comparison between preamps, I defeated the speaker sim and plugged the Leeds into my Peavey's power amp input. Try as I might, I could not replicate the kind of clarity or detail that the Peavey front end was delivering through it's Harma cryo valves. I also compared it to the Amp sims that are included with Apple's "Logic Studio" and found it lacking against those also.
All this said, the Leeds does sound like an amp - just not the 5 star rave review amp that many reviews will lead you to believe it to be.
My Classic 30 is now more reliable after the replacement of the valve sockets with better ones. I certainly would not replace my Amp with the Leeds unless I had no choice. So now the Leeds sits in my gig bag as originally intended - as a back up.
