Omen Extreme-5 BCH L/HSchecter Omen Extreme-5 Bass Guitar (Black Cherry, Left Handed) Review
This is my first Schecter bass. I bought it locally after looking into active 5 string basses. I looked at the Schecter Raiden and also the Diamond P Custom 5, which was more of a hotter jazz bass. After deciding to go with active pickups, I began looking at the youtube reviews and reading the reviews on Talkbass and the usual sites. Most of the comments about the bass are spot on.This bass both looks and sounds beautiful for a great price. Out of the box, the bass is strung with D'Addario XL's and they were okay. I replaced them with my favorite strings right away.
The picture of this bass doesn't do it justice, the mohagany wood grain shows through the dark finish and blends well with the darker cream colored binding.
The Diamond series pickups are monsters. There is a ton of headroom and the pickups pack a huge punch which is very comarable, if not, deeper sounding than some of the EMG's in comparable basses. I bump the bass knob a bit when playing through a 4x10 cab so I do not shake the entire house, Both the bass and treble knobs have a center 'notch' as does the blend knob which is handy, most of the time, I leave the bass centered and roll off the treble. The knobs are slightly recessed into the bass body and are burled like those found on a jazz bass. They are built solid and have a nice feel to them.
The Bridge is solid and has a nice dark chrome look to it. The low B string on my bass was a little loose and floppy and the local tech had to adjust the bridge and open up the B string hole a bit to tighten it up, but after that, the bass plays really well and the B string seems to sounds alot clearer.
The Bass comes with a nut labeled as a 'Black Tusq" which seems to look good and adds to the aggressive tone of the bass, it looks like hard metal and holds everything tight. The cream colored binding also surrounds the 'slashed' styled headstock, which finishes off the look. The tuners seem to work well, although I envision a possible future upgrade because of the ferocious lows of the B string, but who knows.
Schecter necks are usually very small and fast and this neck is no exception, the wood is smooth and the fretwork is very good, no setup or fretwork was needed when I restrung it. The B string does go out of tune often, but that seems to be a trait of most 5 string basses from the B being so low and especially with the aggressive tone and bassy sounds of this beast.
The tone is modern, deep and punchy, everything you want if you are after an aggressive tone for fast playing, hard rock or metal. The blend knob helps shape the tone of the bass. I roll back the bridge pickup and EQ may amp and the bass is very good for heavy rock using a 4x10 cab and a 15! I used steel strings off the batt to get really deep grinding tones and the bass delivers that and more. This is my first 5 string and I wanted a bass completely different than the usual ones I own to use with NEO speaker and I found this one to be a keeper so far. Many reviews say the pickups hape more of the sound than the wood, being mohagany, and after playing it for a few days, this may be true. I do not feel the tones vibrate through the woods as I do with other basses I own.
The only gripe I have with the Omen is the clearcoat finish seems to lightly scratch very easilly. The Mohogany wood combined with the finish seems to scratch with ease. The second day I had the bass, I noticed scratches though very light on the top and back of the bass. I used a cleaner and guitar wax and was able to buff some out, but it seems to be a trait with this finish as other Omens in stores I saw had the same issues. This is too bad, but considering what I paid for the bass, this can be lived with. Alot of people say Schecters are more expensive basses in disguise and I think it is true.
I would give this bass 5 stars if the clearcoat was applied better, but overall it is a bargain at it's price as are many schecter basses and guitars for that matter. This seems to be a bass you can grow with and it is more revered than the Raiden line in bass circles. I do not think I would get bored with this thing, at least for a long time. I was also debating getting a Stiletto Extreme which was the same price more or less with slightly different pickups, but I own a similar branded bass and like the agressive tone and looks of the Omen 5.
