To start, I gave this review 5 stars based on the level of guitar / price range we are talking about. Certainly it wouldn't get 5 stars if compared to the Taylor 900 series, however, I can't stress enough how much I love this guitar. I am a gigging bass player but I do not gig with this guitar, so I was in the market for something for me to play around with at home while keeping in mind that someday I may want to gig with it. I was looking for something in the $600 range originally, knowing I wanted an electric and a cutaway (I already owned a vintage American Ovation - non-electric with no cutaway). I went to guitar center and picked up a 000 model Martin. I played it for a week or two and thought the sound was beautiful but it seemed flimsy and had no finish on any part of it. I decided to exchange it for something else - I had my eye on the Taylor 114ce which I didn't buy the first time because it was around $850 (minus the 15% discount that I had). The 114ce sounded great and was much better built than the Martin, but I did notice it was a far brighter sounding guitar, lacking in some of the softer bassier tones I found in the Martin. It had a varnish finish as well. I then picked up the 214ce to see the difference and found it didn't sound too much different than the 114ce. After playing at GC for a while I then decided to try a different 214ce and this one sounded much nicer - some softer bass tones but still typically "Taylor bright". In addition, the 214ce had a gloss finish as well a rosewood laminate back and sides as opposed to the sapele laminate on the 114ce. Now here's the kicker, I then decided to try out the higher end models (including the 314, 414, 514 and the 814) just for kicks and comparisons. I have to honestly say, there is marked degree of diminishing returns as you play these higher models. Don't get me wrong, the 814ce is beautiful and clearly a nicer guitar, but not for $4,000. The 314ce, which is the next model up, provided a barely noticible difference (if at all) than the 214ce and it was $700 more ! There are two main reasons for that: one - it has solid wood sides and back instead of laminate, and two - the 300 series and up are made in the U.S. whereas the 100 and 200 are made in Mexico. Having said that, it is important to know that a Taylor Mexican-made instrument is not like other manufacturers' Mexican-made instruments. Taylor's Mexican plant is about 40 miles south of the American plant in southern California and the Mexican plant is directly run by Americans. They do not use inferior woods and parts and they are hand-made under American managerial supervision. So in effect, they are not what we have come to know as "Mexican-made". As for the laminate sides and back, this did not seem to have a major effect on the sound as compared to the 314's solid back and sides - not to mention there is less of a chance of warping than there is with solid wood. I would bet anything that if you closed your eyes and listened to me play my 214 and then play a 314, you would have know idea which was which. Now, it is true that the 214 I bought sounded a little nicer than the other 214 I played originally, but this is true with ANY model - YOU MUST PLAY THE INSTRUMENT YOU ARE GOING TO BUY, PERIOD. Especially when you are talking about hand-made instruments, there will be some differences in each one, like a finger print. So anyway, with the 15% discount I convinced myself to spend the $850 (normally $999) for the Taylor 214ce and that was that. I have had it now for about two months and I absolutely love it. I play both finger picking style and strumming / flat picking so the Grand Auditorium body is perfect. This is a beautiful instrument. Most of the consumer Reviews tell that the "Taylor Guitars 200 Series 214-CE-G Grand Auditorium Acoustic-Electric Guitar - Natural" are high quality item.
