MS-4 Warlock Electric Guitar with Maroon Body Review
Just picked up this guitar. My aim is to give an unbiased review of the guitar. First, I paid about the same as Amazon is advertising this for, slightly less.First the PROS:
The guitar was packaged probably the best I've ever seen a guitar packaged. The entire box arrived wrapped in bubble wrap. After removing the bubble wrap the guitar was DOUBLE boxed. After opening both boxes, the guitar itself was also wrapped in bubble wrap. Upon freeing the guitar from the bubble wrap bag, the pickup selector switch had a styrofoam piece protecting it that I removed and the strings themselves were wrapped in light paper. Most impressive packing job.
The guitar is a looker. Very nice looking guitar. Nice finish with no flaws on the body. Neck is straight. Of course it needed a setup out of the box, what guitar doesn't? But I'm skilled at setting up Floyd Rose guitars so this was no big deal. Very sexy.
It works. After setup, i plugged it in, and it works fine. Both pickups work, as does the selector switch and both the volume and tone pots work just fine. No crackle or buzzing noises, etc.
Pickups are surprisingly ok. Very bright. High output. Good for metal or rock. But just average overall.
Now the NEGATIVES:
The neck is pretty fat. I realize that this is a matter of personal preference, so I'm not docking it any points for this fact. But I would prefer a thinner neck.
The fret ends have been filed. This is good in that the ends are not sharp, but frets 1-5 have been filed to such a degree that the high and low E-strings sit just above the filed fret ends. When fretted on those frets, those strings have a tendency to slip off of the fret ends! In other words they filed so much of the fret away, that the string falls off the fret when attempting to fret those frets. I replaced the locking nut with one that pulls the strings slightly closer together so that I could get around this problem. Not good.
The frets themselves are the skinniest, cheapest frets I have ever seen on any guitar. If I had to give this guitar a fret job, I would be worried that there would be nothing left after sanding/filing the factory frets. They work, but they are skinny and cheap. I prefer medium/jumbo or jumbo frets.
The frets are not very level. I used a fret rocker tool to check how level the frets were, and the results were not great. It could definitely use a fret leveling, but I would never invest that kind of money into a guitar so cheap. I might do it myself. Thankfully, I don't have any buzzing or fret-outs when bending or anything, so it's good enough.
The tremolo is crappy. It's a Floyd Rose style tremolo, but one unlike any I have ever seen. It's double locking. The fine adjustment screws were very tight and didn't want to move. I pulled the trem and replaced it at the first string change. Much better now.
SUMMARY:
For the price. This guitar is ok. I would never keep it stock. The body is nice, and you'd be hard pressed to piece together your own guitar for this amount of money. The parts themselves would probably cost you more than what you are paying here. But be prepared to replace the tremolo with a better quality trem. What I would like to do is to replace the neck on this guitar with a better quality neck. But I'm not sure if I want to go there for a cheap guitar like this.
