First off a little about me,I have been playing guitar for 27 years. I've played shows for over 1600 and more. I have owned a good number of instruments of all price ranges. I have a lot of guitar experience for many years. I repair guitars for friends, stemming from broken headstocks, and electronics. I am a guitar "geek" too, collector and pro musician outside of my normal job.
I got this Squier Bullet Telecaster HH Blackout FSR Electric guitar for Christmas.
I was looking for a guitar I could modify, one that I could "hot rod" and transform into a stageworthy monster. A guitar that was the best in the price range. (I looked at Jay Turser teles too) I had friends who owned Squier models I modified (I do guitar tech work and light repairs) that played so killer.
How did a "cheap" guitar sound so good? Well even though these models are built in other countries (this one is from Indonesia), the fit and finish are well above what you'd expect. I only downgraded the rating a star due to the results below.
The Positives:
* KILLER LOOKS. The pictures here don't do it justice, everyone is stunned when they see this guitar. The black finish is so hot and matches the hardware.
* I see zero defects in the black finish.
* Great feel - Good neck plays great
* Sounds great out of the box, no hum, no pickup noise through a peavey 5150 head.
* LIGHT! Basswood body. It's not a brick to carry around. It should be comfy for my live shows.
The Negatives:
* Fret ends needed filing. The ends were a bit sharp on most frets. This is easily remedied with a fret file or a shop visit.
* The tuners are stamped steel and cheap. The Tuner screws holding the tuner covers broke on three tuners. Well you can't expect it to be tuners on a $1,000 tele! I knew there would be parts that would be low quality. The tuners have been replaced. Now most guitarists can get by with these tuners for a while, but I play hard, and I guess if you wanted to modify them down the line, you would be just fine for these for a while. Tuners are easy to replace.
* Small finish imperfections on the headstock. Again, this is so minor. Some 800 grit wet sandpaper fixed this in less than 20 seconds.
I really thought the electronics and pickup would be terrible in this guitar but they sound great! I expected to replace these off the bat first, but I think I will keep them. NO hum, No noise! Good Job Fender! Wow!
If you are a beginner this is a STEAL, and you can grow with this guitar and upgrade it to burn your band mates slack-jawed faces off. So if you are low on cash, this is a great bargain.
If you are experienced, you can modify this guitar to your needs.
(I put sperzel locking tuners and it's working out great)
You can always modify this guitar incrementally.
My future plans are pickup replacements, and possibly the bridge (which has no flaws, and actually feels ok on my hand with no protruding screws).
But Im very impressed with this Squier, I'm sure you will be as well.
