Traditional FinishZildjian K 24-Inch Light Ride Cymbal Review
This is the perfect ride for lower volume music - acoustic or lightly amplified - and especially for backing vocalists. The main traits are lower fundamental and an accompanying range of lower frequency wash. Each note is distinct, and made more so by the wash. I love the way this one swells under mallets, or can pick up a 'zing' by running the metal end of a brush's pullrod around the circumference.
Because of the profile and sound characteristics the bell is weak. It's playable, but a little higher pitched than I like. On the other hand, it does suit the lower volume music for which this cymbal is best suited.
When you first play it you will find that it's somewhat wild and needs a break-in period. I usually hasten that by doing mallet rolls around the circumference for ten minutes a day for a few days. It quickly settles in after that and mellows into a beautiful ride that is relatively easy to control. I believe the control aspects are more a function of the thin ride area and the overall profile in general.
I've owned a number of 24" rides and this is among my favorites. It may be too one dimensional for folks who play a wide range of music genres, but for the quieter stuff this one is a gem.
