Orange Amplifiers Tiny Terror TT15JR Jim Root #4 Signature 15W Tube Guitar Amp Head Orange Review

I love it! I I have it paired with my 66 fender bassman 2x12 cab and it sounds big. Great tone. I run my 64 duo sonic with single coils and it has awesome sustain. It really does make it sing. I have been playing off and on since the 80s and have not heard an amp that has a distortion as good as this one. Does do an alright clean tone but that's not really what this amp is for. I will be running an a/b box so I can switch back and forth from my bassman to the JR TT. I bought this amp for recording and have not laid any tracks yet and it does have a bit of noise but that is to be expected with any high gain amp. Overall this thing really does rock. If you like a nasty sustaining distortion this amp is for you and it will not disappoint.

Oscar Schmidt by Washburn OU280SWK Concert Ukulele Review

The sound exceeded my expectations. I give it 5 stars. It has a full, rich, round tone. It's not as loud as my concert Koaloha, but the tone is probably a little better, though it's somewhat hard to compare, because of the difference in volume. I play it when I want a gentler sound, especially at night. Or just when I want to hear its nice sweet, bell-like tone. I seem to be playing it more often than my tenor Kamaka, and my Koaloha now. It came with Aquila Nylgut strings, which I prefer on my ukes. It's also very solidly built. The body tapers towards the neck, and I like the feel of it. The strings at the nut were a little high, so I filed down the grooves slightly. The nut and saddle are Tusq material.

The appearance fell short of my expectations. I give it four stars. It doesn't look quite as nice as what was on the Oscar Schmidt website, or what I've seen on some Youtube video lessons. It has gold tone Grover tuners, which are very smooth turning, but the knobs themselves aren't gold tone as on the Oscar Schmidt website, they are a matte black sort of hard rubberized plastic. The inlaid abalone scroll work on the neck has a lot of dark brown in it that does not shine. It gives the whole ukulele a sort of antiquish look. Also the fretboard is not solid black ebony, it's striated brown and black. The bridge however is solid black ebony. There are two small glue stains where the bridge joins the soundboard, but I was able to polish them and they're hardly noticeable now. There was some sort of white, chalky substance where the fretboard binding meets the soundboard, but I was able to scape it away with a toothpick and it looks clean there now. The logo on the headplate is not inlaid. It sits on the surface of the wood and is covered over with varnish. Also there is not really enough contrast with the headstock, so it's very hard to read or recognize from even a few feet away. (I would recommend to O.S. a more contrasting logo, so their brand could stand out more.) My uke came with a gray scrape mark about half an inch long on the white binding on the right front. Elsewhere, however, front, back and sides, the koa wood looks very nice, and the finish is immaculate. The abalone inlay of the bindings on the body is also very nice. The interior also looks very clean with no messy joints.

The ukulele case is the best I've seen, with a nice, large overstuffed handle and the Oscar Schmidt logo on it.

For the purchase price to value, I give it 5 stars.

It's really the sound that makes this ukulele outstanding. If it had the gold tone tuning knobs, and a solid black ebony fretboard, as in the photo on the O.S. website, I would have given it an overall five star rating.

Product Feature

  • Revolutionary next generation slide instrument, ergonomically designed for maximum playability
  • Patent pending multi-point strap system allows for multiple vertical and horizontal playing styles
  • Unique magnet loaded pickup with patented variable coil mode control
  • Radical patent pending design provides unprecedented neck access in vertical playing position
  • Specially designed 'Y' strap included

Product Description

It's not a Lap Steel, not a Dobro, and it's not a conventional steel guitar. This instrument is in response to the huge number of requests Peavey has gotten for a lap type steel that could be played standing up. The shape of the PowerSlide is designed to position the playing surface (fingerboard) to the left of the players body allowing unhampered access to the playing surface. The unique 4 point suspension and the special 'Y' strap enable the PowerSlide to be played either horizontally or vertically (and almost anywhere in between).

Peavey Power Slide Guitar - Black 6-string Slide Instrument with Gigbag Review

First, a disclaimer. I'm Suzanne's husband. I own a black one but obviously this review applies to the red and white versions of the Power Slide as well.

I haven't found a lot written about the Peavey Power Slide by users, though a fair amount can be gleaned from the videos. So, I'd like to contribute my experiences for those of you who are interested in this unique instrument. I've had mine for about a year. I play classic rock, country, blues, folk and pop (just about everything) on it so my needs may be a bit more diverse than most. While a lap steel wouldn't seem to be a natural instrument for all songs in all these styles, I've found ways to incorporate it into most of them. The Power Slide adds an emotional dimension to any kind of music that nothing else quite matches because of the way you play this kind of guitar, but partially because the musician is free to move around.

Here is my setup, which is very simple because I'm on a limited budget. Tuning: Open D (low to high) - D, A, D, F#, A, D. Strings: D'Addario XL Nickel Wound 60, 48, 36, 26, 17, 15. Bar: Shubb-Pearse SP2 (I'm still playing with the chromed brass model and haven't tried the stainless version yet). Capo: Golden Gate Squareneck Dobro Capo. Amplifier: Fender Frontman 25R with Fender footswitch. Pretty hard to beat this setup for about four hundred all together.

I like the Open D tuning for several reasons. The tonic D note is on both the high and low strings and I can make the tuning minor by lowering just the 3rd (F#) string. When playing a blues in key of E the D note is easy to play, just play an open 1st, 3rd and 6th string. In country music two-string chords progressions are easy on the 1st and 3rd strings (about half are straight bar and half are single-fret slants), and many of the dobro licks can be played on the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th, strings since the intervals are the same as the first 4 strings on the dobro. I use the capo very rarely, but it comes in handy for dobro-style playing and in songs when you want a drone string in a key other than D such as "I Can See For Miles" by The Who, which uses open E and B strings in standard tuning.

The SP2 bar is unique in that it has a rounded "bullet" end as well as a sharp end. Also, being a bit heavier than most Stevens-style bars it has good sustain. The rounded end makes it easier to simulate a bullet bar on a pedal steel, and to stop just two strings in the middle of chord by pointing the nose between the strings. The sharp end works for pull offs, but for intricate single note passages the bullet end works well because you can slide from string to string without getting hung up.

When playing rock and blues I add varying amounts of distortion using the amp's drive channel. The Power Slide can make some great, surging power chords as you slide into a chord position in songs like "Born to be Wild" or "LA Woman", or sweet, ethereal sounds in moody songs like "Miss You" or "Wish You Were Here" (pickup split half way between single coil and humbucker). For folk style I usually finger pick like a banjo or folk guitarist. The sound can be almost harp-like. I get a nice country steel guitar sound with pickup set on single coil with a generous amount of reverb on the amp. Whenever I play with someone new they always comment on how such a "modest" rig could sound so good.

I almost always play standing up. It is bad enough to have to be looking down most of the time so standing lets me feel like I'm more part of the action. The provided strap works well, though a buckle broke after about 9 months. Fortunately, it is a standard size and was easy to fix. The gigbag, as is often stated, is functional but minimal. It would be nice to have one with more padding...or a hardshell.

The instrument itself is well built in all the places it needs to be. The finish on my black guitar is perfect. All the hardware is solid and well made. The tuners could be heavier, but they stay in tune just fine.

My only real criticisms are: The "belly cut" portion of the body which rests against you belly when you are playing standing up isn't wide enough to allow me to comfortably reach the higher "frets." An extra inch or two there would have made a big difference. I may try to make a piece to fit in there, just to see how much it helps. And, I wish they had raised the fretboard above the body, just a quarter of an inch. I do a fair amount of behind-the-bar string bends so it would be nice to have something to brace against all the way up. Finally, my nit-pick is that I'm not crazy about the weird design on the fretboard. I got used to it pretty quickly, but they could have made the design helpful instead of distracting.

What would I do differently if I were to do it again...nothing really. With more money to spend I would have bought a bigger amp and I'd have a case made for the guitar. My wish list for Peavey's future versions would be a 7 or 8-string model. All things considered, for any amount of money this is a fine instrument that will serve me for a long time. My next purchase will probably be to get a red Powerslide so I can have one in a different tuning...either Open G, or C6.

Reunion Blues RB Continental RBC3 Acoustic Guitar Case Review

PROS
+ Great protection
+ Heck of a lot easier to carry around than a hard shell case
+ Compartments in the front pouch make organizing easier

CONS
- Only a single zipper for the front pouch
- If you plan to carry anything bulky in the front pouch, you'll be fighting to close the zipper
- The backpack straps hike the guitar pretty high (AKA be careful when going through doors!)

WRITTEN REVIEW

First, for the time being, this review will mostly be about my initial impressions. I will update the review if any durability, functionality, or quirks come-up during my usage. Otherwise, assume that the case is holding up well!

I purchased this case for an orchestra model (folk/000/etc) shape, acoustic, steel string guitar. It fits snugly, but it would be a good idea to check the dimensions of the case (available on the Reunion Blues website) with your own ax. I would imagine that the dreadnought will be a better fit for most steel strings. Obviously, this case was designed for classical and should fit those fine.

The case itself is beautiful without drawing too much attention. Looking at the back side fo the case, there's a compartment that runs along the neck of the guitar (on the outside) that makes getting frequently-used items convenient (capos, guitar straps, CDs, business cards, etc). While the case comes with straps that can be tucked away, I put my own straps on from another gig bag thanks to the ring at the top of the case. This allows me to carry the guitar at a lower hight. The stock straps make going through doors a pain.

Moving around to the side of the case is the handle which I absolutely love. It's very comfortable and makes the guitar feel light when carrying it. On the front side are the compartments (probably a major reason why you're looking into a gig bag). The front pouch is a little bit of a pain to get to because of the protective zipper cover but it has a decent amount of space for stuff like CDs, wipe cloths, and other doodads you'd want quick access to. The main compartment has some nice features such as 3 mini pouches for pedals, mesh, zippered case for picks and other loose items, larger pouch for spare strings, a slip case for sheet music or a slim laptop, and my favorite part, a velcro loop to keep your cables neat. Personally, I wouldn't mind more space. Also, the fact that the large storage pouch only has one zipper feels like (again, a first world-world problem and minor) inconvenience. However, I understand that it's probably better to maintain rain resistance. The two compartments are fairly rigid, so if you pack them full of stuff, you'll probably be fighting the zipper. Since the fabric is pretty sturdy, it doesn't have much give.

Now for the most important part, the inside! The blue velvet is absolutely gorgeous and seems to be high quality. The mix of hard foam on the outside, soft foam on the inside provides a durable exoskeleton to protect again general clumsiness and a cloud-like interior to protect the finish of the guitar. Reunion Blues is infamous for their videos where they throw a guitar (encased in their product) off of roofs and show the guitar to still be in tune and perfectly playable. Their videos only use electric guitars, and I certainly wouldn't want to try it with my precious acoustic, but I get the sense that the guitar would be OK from a 6 foot fall were it to land flat on its back.

The neck block sewn firmly into the case (read: not adjustable) and has a hard foam interior. The velcro straps stick nicely together, and the parts that touch the guitar and strings is made of the same, blue velvet that's in the rest of the interior. There's also hard, rubberized patches sewn to cover the areas where your machine heads and endpins come into contact with the case. This helps prevent the rougher edges of your guitar from tearing apart your case from the inside. Additionally, the zippers are designed to never come in contact with the finish of your guitar which is definitely a nice detail.

Bottom Line: This is a fantastic, well-thought protective gig bag that offers similar (if not superior) protection to a hard shell case plus the convenience of a gig bag. It's a little pricey but worth the investment if you have a guitar you don't want to lose to a chance mishap.
