VOX NT2H Lil' Night Train Head Review

I've been chasing tube tone in my tiny apartment for years now. I've tried everything from modelers, tube pedals, one-knob Class A amps, etc. and could never quite hit the sweet spot. I got wind of the Lil' Night Train and was very interested in the idea of a 2W, all-tube head. I tried it at my local guitar shop and was instantly sold.

It's the perfect little amp for people who cannot crank a 100W stack to get good tone at home. I can set the gain down low and dime the master volume for sparkly cleans that won't disturb the neighbors. Or, set the master low and crank the gain for some serious distortion. It can get pretty loud for an apartment if you start maxing out the gain and master but it's not loud enough to play over a drummer if you're thinking of using it in a band setting. Sounds great into a 1x10 cabinet but sounds epic into anything larger.

Unfortunately the headphone out is inadequate. Cleans sound good but any gain sounds very harsh and unusable even for just practicing. It can still be used as line-out into an external cab simulator for recording, which sounds good, but the output direct to headphones is not implemented well. Don't buy this amp if headphone use is one of your top needs.

Yamaha NP-V80 76-key Piaggero Keyboard Review

I didn't buy this keyboard from Amazon, i bought it on e.b.a.y. It was a buy it now and i paid the same price. I always feel obligated to let people know what i think about products especially when im the first to buy it. :D

The biggest reason why I bought this keyboard is because its touch sensitive. Real cheap keyboards are all just electronic harpsichords. I joined a band and I needed something that would resemble a piano as much as possible. This keyboard does just that. The keys are not weighted, but the fact that the springs are heavier as you move down the keys resembles a pianos touch. Honestly, i prefer the light keys. This keyboard would weigh soo much if they were weighted and would be a pain to carry around. Also, its nice to be able to push your limits a bit since you don't have weight to slow you down. But its like visiting the moon and coming back. Everything feels heavy when you sit at a real piano. So just be careful. :D

The sounds in the piano are really good. The piano sound is good enough. I'm no sound expert but it sounds like a piano. Besides, your never going to make it perfect. High and Low notes sound resonate loud and not muffled like on crap keyboards. How loud the keyboard plays at full volume probably is not loud enough for gigs. But its good enough if your practicing and the guitar and bass don't decide to turn their amps up all the way and head bang. The other sounds built into the keyboard are like what you always get with keyboards, strings, organs, voices, gunshots, etc. What I'm very happy about is they are all touch sensitive (excluding things like harpsichords and organs which are obviously not touch sensitive) It does not just play the note louder or softer, It gives it that bite when you play loud, or that softer sound when you play soft. Its nice that the sound engineers put some time into the actual sound. The recording function on this keyboard works really well. Record whatever and it will play it back exactly how it sounded. Really easy to use.

The one thing that I'm not really liking is the appreciator. Its really confusing and I doubt i will actually use it. Idk that might change but for now, It seems useless and confusing. After looking through the manual (the same manual is used for the np-v80 and the np-v60), the only things that are different are the USB connectivity to offload stuff from the keyboard to a flash drive and the appreciator. With the USB connectivity, you could just use the midi interface to record what you play on the computer. Idk. I just have a feeling that i really could have saved 80$ or so and lost a few features that I will never use. But that's for you to judge if you will actually use them or not.

Overall, this is a very solid keyboard. I plan to keep this thing for as long as it will last. I should never have a reason to upgrade this unless I jump into music production and need a synthesizer. But that's a whole different story. If your like me and like to invest your money once, this thing is perfect.

Zildjian 368 GEN16 AE Cymbal Set Review

As the owner of a legacy e-drumset (Roland TD-10), I've been on the hunt for upgrades without breaking the bank. The older Roland cymbals are good, but my TD-10 module itself does not support the newer cymbals (particularly the new ride and hi-hat cymbals). The Zildjian Gen-16 offerings are perfect if you're in this situation, as they use a separate module. I enjoy the look of the roland silver cymbals, but the silver roland vh-12 hi-hat retails for $799.99! On top of that I would need to upgrade my module which would cost another few thousand dollars. I picked up this set of cymbals for less than the price of the vh-12, let alone the module.
So how do they stack up?
Moderately. Let me explain.
First of all, these cymbals are BEAUTIFUL. Your drumset will take your breath away with one glance after adding these to your arsenal. The platinum silver look with the blue lights shimmering is astonishing. It really looks great.
The sound, largely, is only decent. The crash and ride cymbals have an odd tinny sound to them - they don't have the real punch that Zildjian cymbals normally carry. Note that Zildjian offers a software update, and this REALLY makes the cymbals sound better. The hi-hats, however, sound fantastic. They are truly a godsend to the e-drum market. No electric hats can compare to the Zildjian Gen16's, and that, my friends, is worth the price of admission right there. Nothing on your set is going to be hit as often as the hi-hats, and if you're in the game to do it right you can do no better than with the Zildian Gen16 hats. You just can't duplicate the infinite sound possibilities that occur with two cymbals opening and closing with all the variables of timing and positioning.
Note: I use these in a home studio and not in live situations. I have absolutely zero problems with feedback.
One other note is these cymbals are louder than your rubber counterparts. But they're not even half as loud as a real set of cymbals. They're still quiet enough to not bother my neighbors, but you can hear what's going on in the rest of the house.
So the bottom of the line is this - these cymbals are beautiful, and the hi-hats are nearly perfect. The ride and crash cymbals, however, could use some work. But they sound great when used as alternate cymbals for what you've probably already got mounted on your drumset.

Zildjian K Custom 20-Inch Session Ride Cymbal Review

I purchased my 20" model to go with the complete Session set back when Zildjian offered a package deal. My brother had given the set as a gift and I had a hard time getting used to it.

One of the barriers to liking this (and its 18" sibling) is they sound clangy from behind the kit. Out front they actually sound pretty amazing and they also record very well.

Also, unlike other Zildjian K. Custom series, the Session series is consistent. Mine sounds practically identical to one owned by a fellow drummer. And hearing him play is what inspired me to dig out mine, which frankly had not been getting much use over the years.

This cymbal will not project, so for loud music it is not a great choice. There is a lot of definition with a slight wash when playing it, and the bell is very strong. It also crashes well.

Also this ride pairs perfectly with the Zildjian K Custom 14-Inch Session Hi-Hat Cymbals Pair, and when used as a right-side ride with the 18" Session ride on the left it is versatile enough to work with jazz and blues and other quieter types of music. It may work with classic rock, but will definitely not cut through if you play heavier rock or metal.

Zoom H1 Portable Recorder Bundle with Headphones and Polishing Cloth Review

Great little recorder! I video weddings and do not have the money to purchase a good wireless mic system. This is very small and fits in the grooms pocket with a Lav mic connected. The manual options make changing the settings very easy. It is made out of plastic so it can get damaged if it's not taken care of properly but unless you were using it as a hammer, I don't think you'll have a problem. If you will be using the tri-pod mount, it is plastic as well so do not over tighten or else it could crack.

This is also great if you're recording a meeting/seminar, although you have to turn up the gain quite a bit depending on where the presenter is. There is an auto gain, yet if there are people at different distances from you, it will fluctuate too much with a lag in my opinion. There are both MP3 and WAV settings, yet you can also reduce the quality (kbps) of the recording to get more than enough time if you are in a week long training class and the 2gb mini/micro sd card that it comes with is plenty. If you are a recording artist, you'd probably benefit from having an 8gb card to get the best quality and a long recording time.

It looks really cool too so if you're ever stuck in a dark alley with this (not sure why you would be) it can look like a tazer and may save your life (when I say may, I mean probably not). If you are interviewing someone and don't have a wind screen, they may get scared when you point it at them, so forewarn them what it is. Not to mention, use the Hold button after pressing record so you don't miss important audio. I definitely recommend this recorder, for the price you can't go wrong.
